SOS Children’s Villages
Vulnerable children made strong
SOS Children’s Villages is a non-governmental organisation with a social vocation that has been dedicated itself to the needs, care and rights of children since 1949. Children without parental care en those who live in a difficult family situation, are the centre of our action in 132 countries and territories.
Curative and preventive actions
SOS Children’s Villages realizes this vision through two complimentary actions.
On the one hand, we work curatively and offer children without a home a stable family environment. An SOS Children’s Village consists of a community of ten to fifteen family houses. Each house accommodates a steady group of six to ten children. Siblings are never separated. The children live with their SOS mother, who is not just an educator or a childminder, but someone who devotes herself entirely to the family she makes together with the children.
On the other hand, we work preventively and support parents in difficult living conditions, so the family can stay together. SOS Children’s Villages offers the local community these family strengthening programmes to make families independent and prevent that children are left to themselves.
The SOS Children’s Villages include one or more schools, vocational training centres, social and medical centres. Altogether, there are more than 2.150 programmes that also welcome the children and adults of the surrounding community.
The Maas Marathon supports the new SOS village in Kinshasa
In 2008, SOS Children’s Villages started the construction of the brand-new SOS platform in Kinshasa in DR Congo. It consists of 15 family houses, a socio-medical centre and a primary school that can receive more than 280 children.
The organizing team of the Maas Marathon commit themselves to the cause of these children and hope to send as many children as possible to the primary school of the new SOS Children’s Village of Kinshasa. That way, they offer the children of Kinshasa a more promising future!
